Trump’s surrogates have a difficult job: attempt to make Trump’s terrible habits and choices somehow look good. One of the hardest things they have to figure out how to defend is Trump’s golfing. During a panel on CNN, that’s exactly what Ben Ferguson tried to do, only to be met with laughter by the rest of the panel.
Host Don Lemon started the discussion, pointed out that Trump visited Mar-a-Lago 6 weekends, and cost taxpayers $21.6 million dollars. CNN contributor Bakari Sellers followed up with “in the first 81 days of office, President Obama went to the golf course course zero times.” Lemon added to this, talking about Trump’s complaints about Obama going golfing, “If you don’t see the hypocrisy in that, then you don’t want to see it, you’re blind.”
Ferguson was asked to respond, and his remarks made the panel break down:
“Three points here. One, what has the national debt done under the spending under this president? Has it gone up or has it gone down?”
Lemon immediately replied to the straw man argument, pointing out that they were “talking about golfing and going to your vacation home.”
From there, Ferguson’s remarks grew more desperate, suggesting that Trump had to go to Mar-a-Lago and play golf with Chinese President Xi to build a relationship with the Foreign leader, that he couldn’t do at Camp David or the White House.
