When Trump met with Angela Merkel, he was rude and distant, and disrespectful when the camera wasn’t rolling, the exact opposite of what he did when he met with a brutal dictator. Trump’s behavior towards Merkel might not be surprising, though. Merkel was close with President Obama, and Trump is on the warpath to destroy everything Obama built. It seems that, just maybe, Obama is fighting back.
What seems like a “too convenient to be coincidental” moment, Obama is making his first official appearance in Germany, with Merkel, while Trump is also in Germany.
Obama will be traveling to Germany to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. While there, he and Merkel will be in a panel discussion entitled “Being Involved in Democracy: Taking on Responsibility Locally and Globally.” The discussion is even being held in front of the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of European unity. Meanwhile, Trump is going to Germany for his first meeting abroad with foreign leaders.
If the idea of Obama and Merkel talking about democracy while Trump is across the street (or so we hope) isn’t good enough, the fact that Obama and Trump will be arriving in Germany on the same day, May 25th, makes it even better. Obama is well-liked in Germany, and might even help Merkel with her reelection in September. While Trump is in Germany, he will have to watch Obama steal his spotlight.
