The recent pictures of Trump walking away from Melania as she descended the Air Force One steps led to criticism of how Trump treats his wife, especially since this behavior is a pattern. But if the Twitter remarks seemed like speculation, how about the comments of an Etiquette Expert?
Jacqueline Whitmore is just that—and she had some criticism of her own for the President, noting that the distance between them certainly seems like “a sign of disrespect.” In her interview with the Huffington Post, Whitmore says, “In the photographs, what we’re clearly seeing is that Donald Trump is walking not just one stair ahead, not two stairs ahead, but a few feet ahead. She’s not being accompanied by him.”
Whitmore noted that former presidents Reagan and Obama were always close or beside their respective wives and “they’re a unit, they’re a couple, they’re engaging in this activity together.”
Another Etiquette Expert, Elaine Swann, added to the critique:
“The husband at the bottom of the stairs, saluting and greeting the people there, and the wife is still at the top of the stairs – this is incorrect.”
“The proper thing for him to do is to wait for his spouse at the bottom of the stairs and then take her hand and assist her down the last few steps as she comes down. This was not done.”
Trump’s character is seen around the world, and this is what they see. And, as Whitmore states, “He’s a role model…he should be modeling a different kind of behavior.”
