Palm Beach Post reports that Citizens of Mar-a-Lago may see increased taxes thanks to Donald Trumps weekly visits to the his “Winter White House.” County officials are looking at the possibility of declaring the resort a “municipal service benefit unit,” which would give the county the authority it needs to raise taxes on the club to help pay for the cost of the president’s weekly trips.
Even though US taxpayers are currently on the hook for $3 million for every weekend get-away by the commander-in-chief, the residents of Palm Beach are currently stuck with a growing tab, which is putting a strain on its other budget priorities. Local leaders have pointed out disruptions to the local airport when Trump flies in and local businesses have complained of lost sales.
PBC Commissioners are growing increasingly frustrated with federal inaction on their requests for reimbursement. Palm Beach County Sheriff, Ric Bradshaw, estimated in mid-February that the cost of providing help during Trump visits had reached about $1.4 million.
Congress has set aside $7 million to cover such costs by the traveling carnival, but Palm Beach has yet to receive a dime of that money. Palm Beach even reached out to the CBO and Homeland Security.

“We urge you to consider using those funds or any other resources that you deem appropriate to help the county offset these costs, We appreciate your attention to this matter.”
The County followed up with a call to Homeland security that they described as polite but discouraging.

“They were polite, but that’s where they stopped, I did not get a lot of encouragement.”
These growing costs and headaches to Palm Beach County by President Trump are the polar opposite of statements by then candidate Trump in 2016. In criticizing Obama he told ITK, “I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done, I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to once again head to Mar-a-Lago this weekend.
