In a year defined by lewdness and idiocy, it is only fitting that a brilliant mind like Stephen Hawking has announced that he has no plans on visiting the United States for at least a few years.
Afraid of the United State’s “definite swing to a right-wing more authoritarian approach”, the physicist is turning away from a country that only a few years ago awarded him the presidential medal of freedom in 2009 under then President Barack Obama.
Unfortunately, Hawking’s decision to avoid the United States will not shield him completely from populist barbarism. Hawking is a member of the U.K., which recently voted to leave the EU over similar anti-globalist sentiments which fueled the Trump campaign.
“Trump was elected by people who felt disenfranchised by the governing elite in a revolt against globalisation” he said on ITTV1. “His priority will be to satisfy his electorate, who are neither liberal nor that well informed.”
As a scientist, Hawking has more than enough reason to detest the Trump administration. The President’s cabinet picks, budgets and policies are openly destructive to scientific progress.
