The Republican party typically walks in lock step with other members, and that is part of the reason they are such a strong cohesive unit. However, not all Republicans are fans of President Donald Trump and this includes former presidential candidate Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who has been a thorn in Trump’s side for months. Now that the president has released his budget proposal Graham has taken to ridiculing Trump’s offerings in the media which will surely not mend the divide between the two politicians.
Graham was a guest on NBC News and he did not mince words about Trump’s budget proposal. He, in part, said:
It’s not going to happen. It would be a disaster. A budget this lean would put those who serve overseas for the State Department at risk. And it’s not going to happen.
With Graham’s latest volley into the fray, he has set up a showdown which Trump has been attempting to avoid. The actions by Trump do not serve the interests of the entirety of his party, and therefore he has not earned their loyalty. Graham is nearing retirement anyway, and he has little fear of a legislative reprisal from Trump. If the president is capable of learning a lesson, he should take from this scenario that his tactics of bullying and fearmongering will not impact every single person he comes in contact with. If he wishes to be the leader of every person in the United States he is going to have to learn new tactics.
