Maine Senator Susan Collins said Wednesday that she will not support Betsy DeVos to be Donald Trump’s Education secretary pick.
“I come to the floor to announce a very difficult decision that I have made, and that is to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos to be our nation’s next secretary of Education,” she said from the Senate floor.
Collins is the first Republican senator to come out against DeVos — or any other Cabinet nomination from Trump. GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowksi has also voiced concerns about DeVos’s nomination.
The move underscores the rocky road DeVos has to clear the upper chamber. She will need a simple majority of lawmakers and Republicans only have a 52-seat majority. No Democrat has said they will support her.
Betsy DeVos would be a nightmare for education. She only received the nomination because she’s a billionaire donor and fundraiser for the Republican Party.
