During the presidential campaign of 2016 then candidate Donald Trump bragged endlessly about all of the support he enjoyed from military leaders. However, now that he has been inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States the reality is much different than Trump’s earlier boasts. He finds himself in command of the mightiest military the world has ever known and the top military brass are not individuals who play favorites or who give answers just to appease a child emperor like Trump. Instead, Trump is dealing with scenarios of which he did not understand before he won, and still does not understand even though the final decisions fall upon his shoulders.
The president clearly sees a political benefit in attaching himself to military leaders with distinguished names. Far less clear is whether President Trump appreciates how the generals on his cabinet developed these reputations, partly through their penchant for straight talk and asking tough questions.
Trump is not a fan of tough questions, or of individuals who present viewpoints to him which contradict his own. In Trump’s world, he is the ultimate master and can never be wrong because he’s just that marvelous. That view of himself may have worked when he was robbing businesses blind, but now he is responsible for the entire country’s safety and he must put his oath to protect the nation before his own ego or there will be dire consequences.
