One of Donald Trump’s main campaign promises was to repeal and replace Obamacare, and it appears that promise is soon to come to fruition. This is just fine with Republicans who have been attempting to end the legislation since its inception. While Republicans control both the House of Representatives and the Senate, there is little to stop them from implementing their plan, and a copy of the actual legislation that may be used has been leaked to the public.
The legislation would take down the foundation of Obamacare, including the unpopular individual mandate, subsidies based on people’s income, and all of the law’s taxes. It would significantly roll back Medicaid spending and give states money to create high-risk pools for some people with pre-existing conditions. Some elements would be effective right away; others not until 2020.
The document itself is over 100 pages long and is written in a way that only a legislative genius could understand. This is part of the Republican plan to make what they are attempting to do to be unintelligible to the average person. Using crisp and clear language is not in the Republican interest as they do not serve the common citizen, but that of corporations. Therefore, whatever they can do to obfuscate the process is much better for them.
An unholy trinity has taken place in the government of the United States. The Republicans will eventually pass the new legislation, and Trump will certainly sign it much to the despair of individuals who require Obamacare’s provisions to live.
