The whole world is watching every move that Donald Trump makes now that he has been sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. This includes the world’s most powerful and revered religious leader, Pope Francis, who issued an edict warning the world not to allow history to repeat itself.
In times of crisis, we lack judgment, and that is a constant reference for me. The most obvious example of European populism is Germany in 1933. After the crisis of 1930, Germany is broken, it needs to get up, to find its identity, a leader, someone capable of restoring its character, and there is a young man named Adolf Hitler
Francis, who is loved by billions around the globe, did not mention Trump by name. However, it was quite clear who Francis was talking about when he said, “Hitler didn’t steal the power. His people voted for him, and then he destroyed his people.”
Former President Barack Obama previously enjoyed a warm relationship with Francis, but that is not going to be the case with President Trump. Francis is acutely aware of Trump’s behavior and rhetoric, and he knows what danger Trump presents to the world. Now that Francis has placed Trump on notice that he will not stay silent during Trump’s presidency, it is up to Trump to react. Nobody on the planet would be surprised if Trump took the words of Francis and lashed out at him in a Twitter tirade — in fact they’d be fools to expect nothing less.
