Immigration policies were one of the largest parts of Donald Trump’s platform during the presidential campaign, and he rode populist outrage all the way to the White House in a shocking victory over Sec. Hillary Clinton. Now that Trump sits in the ultimate seat of power he is performing some peculiar maneuvers that have left many individuals scratching their heads. For example, it seems Trump is set on deporting individuals to Mexico even when those individuals are not Mexican citizens.
A memo from the Department of Homeland Security has leaked and it shows part of Trump’s plan is to be ruthless in his deportation policy. If individuals enter the United States from Mexico illegally, but they are not from Mexico, Trump wants to send them back to Mexico anyway. No matter the nationality of the individuals, if they illegally enter the US via Mexico – they are the responsibility of Mexico’s government rather than the government of the United States to spend resources shipping the individuals back to their country of origin. The Secretary of Homeland Security, John Kelly, signed the memo which read:
Returning them to the foreign contiguous territory from which they arrived, pending the outcome of removal proceedings saves the Department’s detention and adjudication resources for other priority aliens.
At this time it is not known how Mexico will respond to Trumps’s new immigration policies.
