Donald Trump announced today that he will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 29, and users on social media began suggesting actor Alec Baldwin take his place at the event.
Trump would be the first president to skip the dinner since Ronald Reagan in 1981, who missed the event because he was recovering from an assassination attempt less than a month before, but even then he was still able to deliver remarks to the event via telephone.
Baldwin’s impression of Trump has been a staple of Saturday Night Live since before the election, and the popularity of the actor’s impersonation had stars like Zach Braff and Diane Warren calling for Baldwin to attend in the absent president’s place — in character.
“Time to suit up,” Braff tweeted, while Warren pleaded with Baldwin: “Oh pleeeeeez Alec Baldwin go as trump at Correspondents Dinner!!!!”
Baldwin has not yet responded to the requests.
