Donald Trump’s replacement for ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn has turned down the job.
Robert Harward, a well-respected retired admiral and U.S. Navy SEAL, turned down the offer in large part because Trump would not let him bring in his own team, according to these sources.
Flynn resigned earlier this week after reports surfaced that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about the content of his phone calls with the Russian ambassador.
During a press conference on Thursday, Trump said that his decision to seek Flynn’s resignation was simplified due to the fact that he had an “outstanding” candidate in line to replace him. The White House did not immediately respond to requests to comment.
CNN’s Jake Tapper added this interesting tidbit:
A friend of Harward's says he was reluctant to take NSA job bc the WH seems so chaotic; says Harward called the offer a "shit sandwich."
