Republicans in Arizona are showing how patriotic they are by attempting to criminalize protest. Worse yet, they have moved to create a law which makes it possible to arrest individuals not only for protesting, but for merely planning to protest. They have done this in the name of protecting civil society from the possibility that during a protest, a riot may break out. There is absolutely no empirical evidence to prove their draconian concepts would prevent anything. In fact, this may lead to an even greater outpouring of violence by individuals angry that their rights are being assaulted.
You now have a situation where you have full-time, almost professional agent-provocateurs that attempt to create public disorder. A lot of them are ideologues, some of them are anarchists. But this stuff is all planned. Wouldn’t you rather stop a riot before it starts? Do you really want to wait until people are injuring each other, throwing Molotov cocktails, picking up barricades and smashing them through businesses in downtown Phoenix?
What is next, one wonders, as Republicans travel down the road to oblivion in smashing the constitutional rights of Americans? Protest is the bedrock of the American experience, and if these fools believe they will quickly and simply wash away hundreds of years of tradition they are sorely mistaken.
Do you think the government has the authority to stop anarchists from protesting? Comment below and let us know.
