During the presidential campaign then candidate Donald Trump dodged the issue of releasing his tax returns. Trump claimed his taxes were the subject of an audit by the IRS and he could not release them, but vowed to do so immediately after the audit was completed. This, of course, was a nonsensical lie. Now that Trump has won the election and is the 45th President of the United States the American people have not forgotten about the tax issue.
The White House has a petition website which allows individuals the ability to bring issues to the forefront of debate. If any particular petition receives enough online signatures, that issue is guaranteed a response by the White House. When Trump’s tax issue was made into a petition, it quickly found itself to be the most responded to petition in the history of the program.
The petition titled, “Immediately release Donald Trump’s full tax returns, with all information needed to verify emoluments clause compliance” received over 375,000 signatures in a matter of days. Previously the record holder was a petition which asked for the despicable Westboro Baptist Church to lose their status as a religious organization which would force them to pay taxes with 367,000 signatures.
If the White House maintains its promise to the public they will now be forced to respond. However, they are not legally obliged to do so and it would not be a surprise if they do respond that the answer is the same canned answer Trump has been providing for months.
