When President Donald Trump originally won the election against Secretary Hillary Clinton many observers, from both sides of the political aisle, believed it was the beginning of the end of the American nation. Now that prophecy has become a reality after it was announced the United States has lost its status as a fully fledged democracy.
The startling announcement came from the Economist Intelligence Unit which determined that the United States, for the first time in its over 200 year history, is now considered a “flawed democracy.” The determination is based upon five different categories which include political culture, civil liberties, electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of government, and political participation. The United States was ranked 8.05 in 2015, just barely above the threshold to be considered a full democracy. In the latest ratings by the Economist Intelligence Unit the United States fell to 7.98.
While some may rush to claim that Trump was the cause of the downgrade the report stated this was not the case when they said, “The U.S. has been teetering on the brink of becoming a flawed democracy for several years, and even if there had been no presidential election in 2016, its score would have slipped below 8.00.”
There is little doubt that under the regime of Trump, regardless of how long it lasts, will force the score of the United States to fall even lower than where it sits today. Just where is the bottom located? How low can the score go? The nation will have to wait and see.
