Outgoing Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, are set to receive a warm welcome they return to Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday.
Hundreds of Delawareans are expected to greet the Biden’s when they arrive in their home state as part of a “welcome home” rally.
Biden will attend Donald Trump inauguration Friday morning before leaving Washington via Amtrak. Biden’s planned return to Wilmington on Friday will mark the closing of an eight-year stint as vice president and a 36-year career as a U.S. senator.
Outgoing President Obama awarded a tearful Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom last week.
In his farewell address, Obama addressed his colleague and friend:
“To Joe Biden… the scrappy kid from Scranton who became Delaware’s favorite son — you were the first decision I made as a nominee, and it was the best,” he said. “Not just because you have been a great vice president, but because in the bargain, I gained a brother. And we love you and Jill like family, and your friendship has been one of the great joys of our lives.”
After leaving office on Friday, Biden will work on foreign policy issues at the University of Pennsylvania, and is expected to continue his cancer “moonshot” through an organization called the Biden Trust.
