The Republican party is notoriously known for their ability to work in lockstep with one another out of fear. However, President Donald Trump’s rise to power has changed all of the rules. According to a legendary reporter Republicans are openly questioning Trump’s fitness to be president.
Carl Bernstein has been covering politics for decades. He was recently a guest on CNN where he described what he has heard around Washington, D.C. amongst Republicans who were speaking anonymously. Bernstein said:
I am hearing from Republicans, and other reporters are as well, that there is open discussion by members of the President of the United States’ own party about his emotional maturity, stability. People are saying that his psyche is driving the news cycle. We are in uncharted territory here and we ought to talk to some of our colleagues about what they are hearing. I think it’s a really fruitful area because I’ve never heard people talking about a president… the way this subtext is now a talking point.
Trump’s behavior is certainly cause for concern, and this week has only been his first full week in office. He has been described as erratic and unhinged at having to deal with protesters outside of the White House. Trump is also, apparently, very emotionally distraught by how few individuals attended his inauguration ceremony as he cannot stand knowing he is not nearly as popular or welcomed by the American people as Barack Obama was when he came to power.
