The world was shocked when Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton to become the incoming 45th President of the United States. Trump will be inaugurated in less than a week, to which the whole world waits in terror. When Trump was campaigning he promised to build a massive wall across the border of the United States and Mexico. Trump further promised that he would force the Mexican government to pay for the costs associated with building the wall. Now Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has issued a blistering rebuke of Trump.
While speaking to a group of diplomats Peña Nieto said of Trump’s plan to build his wall:
It is evident that we have differences with the new United States government on some issues, such as a wall that Mexico absolutely will not pay for. At no time will we accept anything that goes against our dignity as a country and our dignity as Mexicans. Basic principles such as sovereignty, the national interest and the protection of our citizens are non-negotiable.
The hardline by Peña Nieto places Trump in a difficult position and one where he can potentially become embarrassed. There isn’t a thing Trump can do to force the government of Mexico so shell out billions of dollars to build a wall on its border which it wants. Trump may beat his chest and threaten military action, but a war would cost far more than the wall itself making any veiled threatens Trump makes to be entirely toothless.
