In an interview with the New York Times this morning about Meryl Streep’s scathing Golden Globes speech (“as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind”), Donald Trump claimed that actually, so many celebrities and regular people are coming to his inauguration that all the “dress shops” in Washington, D.C. are sold out.
“We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars,” Trump told the Times. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”
But that isn’t the truth.
“We have plenty of dresses!” said Eleanor Janhunen, a clerk at Proper Topper at 1350 Connecticut Ave. “We have sparkly dresses and some long dresses and cocktail dresses.”
Jennifer Nygard of Everard’s Clothing in nearby Georgetown also gave Trump a dressing-down: “Yeah, ‘sold out’ is a real stretch.”
“We have dressy dresses and party dresses,” said Nygard, whose store is at 1802 Wisconsin Ave. Alexa Johnson, owner of Ella-Rue in Georgetown said the same thing, too. Lots of dresses. No waiting.
“And we have so much in red because we planned ahead,” Johnson added.
Ricki Peltzman, the owner of Upstairs on 7th, which is also just steps from the White House, said she’s had several Republican women enter her store at 1299 Pennsylvania Ave. NW and find exactly what they were looking for.
“They all got dresses,” Peltzman said. “Tell the president-elect that every store in D.C. has beautiful dresses and we are ready to make everyone look beautiful for his inauguration.”
So don’t worry Trump fans! If you need a dress for the inauguration, Washington, DC is filled with them!
