Donald Trump is having a private dinner with Mitt Romney tomorrow night, according to two sources briefed on the matter.
This news comes as Trump’s deliberation over whom to tap as his secretary of state plays out with an unusual level of public drama. Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee, is among those being considered for the post.
However, the idea of picking Romney, who for much of the last year was a loud Trump critic, has split the president-elect’s team. Several of his top advisers have voiced concern about picking Romney, convinced that he would be disloyal. Over the weekend, Trump’s former campaign manager Kellyanne Conway launched an attack on Romney during a swing through the Sunday show circuit.
News also broke today that Trump is considering David Petraeus for the Sec. of State position.
This dinner meeting could either mean that Trump is formally offering Romney the spot (which would be great), or telling him he won’t get the spot. But that could be done over the phone, so who knows at this point.
