As the presidential election winds down into its last two weeks it would appear that members of the media are no longer worried about alienating either candidate from appearing on their broadcasts. The attitude of treating candidates with kid gloves is a large part of the reason why Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s candidacy was able to grow to where it is today. CNN’s president, Jeff Zucker, indicated he regretted giving Trump wall-to-wall coverage at the early stages of his campaign, which may explain why a CNN reporter took Trump out to the woodshed in an ambush interview that left the failed businessman flustered.
CNN reporter Dana Bash confronted Trump in the lobby of his newly opened hotel in Washington, D.C.. She wanted to know why Trump was at the hotel at all, rather than out campaigning. Bash asked, “To people who say you’re taking time out of swing states to go do this, you say …”
Trump responded by threatening to blackball Bash from ever covering him or his campaign ever again:
I say the following: You have been covering me for the last time – a long time. I did yesterday eight stops and three major speeches, and I’ve been doing this for weeks straight. I left there for an hour-and-a-half. I’m going to North Carolina right now, then I’m going to Florida. I’m going up to New Hampshire. For you to ask me that question is actually very insulting because Hillary Clinton does one stop and then goes home and sleeps, and yet, you’ll ask me that question. I think it’s a very rude question, to be honest with you.
Trump’s answer was certainly an overreaction, and the lady doth protest too much, me thinks. Why? Because Trump knew she was right.
