While the attention of the entire world has been affixed on the train-wreck of an election involving the presidential candidates of the Republican nominee Donald Trump, and the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, it is easy to forget other people are doing amazing things. One such individual, former President Jimmy Carter, has made the most of his post-presidency by being the living embodiment of his religious beliefs in spending his golden years building houses for those who are less fortunate.
Carter’s association with Habitat For Humanity has been heavily documented as unusual, because most other past presidents attempt to cash in on their fame by giving speeches for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Carter, instead, has issued a new announcement about his next project with Habitat for Humanity. He said:
We are excited to head to Canada in 2017 with President and Mrs. Carter. Their longstanding commitment to helping families build a better future for themselves has been a blessing to us and continues to inspire people everywhere to help us fulfill our mission.
The 91-year-old philanthropist also said, “Decent shelter is something we all need to thrive. With the help of volunteers, we will create strong, stable homes and communities.” The attitude by Carter is in stark contrast to that of Republicans, who insist the poor are that way because of their own laziness. It is also quite difficult to imagine Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton breaking a sweat in the hot sun to build a house for a homeless person. My how times have changed.
