If one were to take a poll as to who had the worst political year, the likely winner would be Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. After losing the presidential nomination contest, Christie did his best to latch upon Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s coat tails and became Trump’s attack dog. Christie spent months on the campaign trail defending Trump, only to be passed over as Trump’s vice presidential pick. After ducking into the shadows to regroup what was left of his small amount of dignity, Christie was named the chairman of Trump’s transition team and Christie is back stumping for Trump defending Trump’s indefensible rhetoric.
While a guest on CNN’s “State of the Union” Host Jake Tapper grilled Christie on Trump’s past “birther” rhetoric that President Barack Obama was not born within the United States. Christie stated, “It’s just not true that he kept it up for five years. It’s not like he was talking about it on a regular basis until then. So, the birther issue is a done issue. Donald Trump has said it’s a done issue now.”
Christie’s defense comes on the heels of Trump’s attempt to shift blame from his birther rhetoric to Hillary Clinton. Trump says it was Clinton who originated the rumors about Obama’s birth during their hotly contentious 2008 primary duel. Tapper brought this point up to Christie:
Just as a point of fact, Donald Trump did not accept when Barack Obama released his birth certificate in 2011. He kept up this whole birther thing until Friday, that’s five years.
The New Jersey governor snapped back, “No, Jake. It wasn’t like he was talking about it on a regular basis until then. And when the issue was raised, he made very clear the other day what he position is.”
