The first presidential debate is in the books, and the far majority of individuals believe it was Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton who took the glory from the debate stage. Near the end of the 90 minute debate, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump stated he felt Clinton had treated him unfairly. Trump decided he was not going to retaliate and cited Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, as his reason to not disclose whatever it was he held back.
Trump stated, “Her husband was in the room along with her daughter, who I think is a very nice young lady, and I didn’t want to say what I was going to say about what’s been going on in their life, so I decided not to say it. I thought it would be very disrespectful to Chelsea and maybe to the family, but she said very bad things about me. Worse than what she said, she’s taking these phony ads, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on phony ads, and I think it’s a disgrace that she’s allowed to do that.”
How generous of Trump. Apparently he believes he should be granted a medal. For her part, Chelsea Clinton recently granted an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine and said of the incident:
My reaction to that is just what my reaction has been kind of every time Trump has gone after my mom or my family, which is that it’s a distraction from his inability to talk about what’s actually at stake in this election and to offer concrete, comprehensive proposals about the economy, or our public school system, or debt-free college, or keeping our country safe and Americans safe here at home and around the world.
And candidly, I don’t remember a time in my life when my parents and my family weren’t being attacked, and so it just sort of seems to be in that tradition, unfortunately. And what I find most troubling by far are Trump’s — and we talked about this when you interviewed me the night before the Iowa caucus — are Trump’s continued, relentless attacks on whole swaths of our country and even our global community: women, Muslims, Americans with disabilities, a Gold Star family. I mean, that, to me, is far more troubling than whatever his most recent screed against my mom or my family is.
Another failed gambit for Trump. He failed during the debate, and he failed with his petty insinuations against Clinton and her family who are well prepared to handle his bombastic speaking style. If attacks against Hillary’s marriage is the best Trump can muster, he may as well just quit the race now and save face. His next debate beating will take place on October 9, and he will surely have more excuses to defend his next anticipated poor performance.
