Following the shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott in North Carolina the issue of guns and “black lives matter” was discussed on Real Time With Bill Maher. Maher raised the point that North Carolina is an open carry state, raising questions about possible bias when you see a white person carrying a gun versus a black person.
Via RawStory: “We apparently live in this country where it’s open carry really just for white people,” he said. “Also by the way, it’s ‘open angry’ just for white people. When you talk to the [Donald] Trump people, they’re angry. And then the media, they talk about that like it’s a virtue … But black people can’t be angry.”
Even if Scott had a gun, Maher said, police “don’t have to kill every time somebody does something that makes [them] nervous.”
Maher has strange views on the 2nd amendment. He’s previously stated that he would rather there were no guns, but he owns one to protect himself from all the people that do. Maher takes issue with “gun culture” in America, and a lack of training with leads officers to empty their entire clip on someone, long after it was necessary to cease firing.
Officer Betty Shelby was charged with first degree manslaughter after she killed Terence Crutcher on video that has been released from a helicopter and multiple police dashcams. Maher claimed that Shelby was also a victim – of bad police training.
Tulsa police officer Betty Shelby, who was charged with manslaughter on Thursday for shooting Terence Crutcher, was also a victim.
“She’s a victim of bad police training […] Police do not train the way they should. If you’re that nervous, you can’t do this job.”
