NFL QB likely to lose job over refusing to stand for National Anthem

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick created a firestorm around the nation when he refused to participate in the singing of the National Anthem of the United States. Such a thing is sacrosanct in American society, but Kaepernick had his reasons — mainly because he was protesting police violence against black Americans. Now his decision to take a stand may end up costing him his career, but there is evidence to suggest Kapernick was going to be shown the door from the 49ers long before he chose to make a political statement.

Fans of the NFL have been calling for Kaepernick to be removed from the roster of the 49ers following his refusal to stand for the National Anthem, coupled with Kaepernick’s promise to follow through with his protest to not stand ever again. Presently Kaepernick commands a yearly salary of $11.9 million and his contract will expire by the end of this season. According to the analysis of Jay Glazer, of Fox News, Kaepernick was likely to be cut from the team even if he never stirred the political pot. Glazer said, “Regardless of politics or not he has a very, very big uphill battle to make this team. I’d be shocked if he’s on the 49ers by the time this season ends. It has nothing to do with political views whatsoever. He lost a ton of weight this off-season, had three surgeries, couldn’t work out, lost that double threat, that size-speed ratio. Nothing to do with political views, he just hasn’t been effective. He’s regressing as a player. I’d be shocked if he’s on this roster by the end of this year. He may not be on it in the next two weeks.”

Considering Kaepernick’s massive salary, it doesn’t make financial sense to remove him as the 49ers owe him millions of dollars. However, if the 49ers were able to convince another team Kaepernick was worth trading to them, his next team would be responsible for his remaining salary. The worry about the management of the 49ers is, considering Kaepernick’s present situation, who would be willing to take sign him knowing the type of negative media he would bring to a new team?
