An eight-month-old baby is alive due to the family dog shielding the baby from a fire which engulfed the family home.
A fire broke out in a Baltimore home and eight-month-old Viviana Poremski was trapped on the second floor. The baby’s mother, Erika Poremski , was arriving home when she saw her house was on fire. She said she heard Viviana crying, “I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her. I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t get her out. Nobody could.”
Thankfully the family dog, Polo, took the selfless action of laying on top of the trapped baby, allowing himself to be killed in the fire to protect Viviana.
Ms. Poremski said of Polo’s sacrifice:
He was my first baby and now I lost him. And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it.
The eight-month-old was safely recovered from the home. Pormeski said, “She only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door.”
What is at issue here is why the baby was alone in the home with which to begin, and how the fire even started if the baby and dog were the only ones inside the residence. Police and Fire officials are both conducting independent investigations.
