Comedian and HBO host John Oliver of the hit show “Last Week Tonight” floated a fantastic idea; Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump should drop out of the race today and claim his entire candidacy has been satire. If he does not drop out his loss is all but assured, so Trump leaving the stage while saving face is a win-win for all involved. Democrats will have the White House, Republicans will be able to run a different candidate and reclaim some of their dignity, insomuch as is possible, and Trump will have a viable excuse why his humiliating defeat was not his fault.
Oliver made a convincing pitch, “Just think about how triumphant it would feel to say on national television, ‘I openly ran on a platform of impossible ignorant proposals, steeped in racial bigotry, and nobody stopped me. In fact you embraced me for it. What the fuck was that about?'”
The comedian went on to describe how Donald Trump has actually made some coherent points during his campaign, including when Trump said, “Before this, before two months ago, I was a businessman. I give to everybody. When they call, I give. And you know what? When I need something from them, two years later, three years later, I call them. They are there for me. And that’s a broken system.”
We all know Donald Trump hates to lose. He has said he has spent his entire life “winning”, a-la Charlie Sheen. If Trump were to take Oliver’s advice he could ride off into the sunset having received thousands of hours of free airtime, and go back to doing what he does best. Selling cheaply made goods and overpriced hotel rooms to unsuspecting consumers.
